Mail Order Catalogs

Kristy Annely asked:

As consumer-buying power widens, so are shopping options. Included in those ioptions are mail order catalogs. Started by Aaron Montgomery Ward in 1872, this line of shopping has brought millions of products to many consumers who prefer to shop at home. As a travelling sales man, Aaron Ward realized that his rural customers, the fishermen and farmers could be better served by mail order. This innovation proved to be a revolutionary idea as the single paged catalog expanded to 540 paged illustrated publications selling over 20,000 products. The publication of this catalog bears similar resemblance to the publication of magazines and is also distributed usually via postal service or via the Internet.

As mentioned earlier, the first mail order catalog created by Aaron Montgomery Ward. It was a single sheet of paper containing certain products and their corresponding prices. Ordering instructions were also written on this sheet of paper. This catalog eventually expanded with more merchandises to choose from. Soon the Eaton’s Department store in Toronto, Canada followed this booming business in 1884. A decade later, the Sears Catalog was published.

One advantage of shopping from mail order catalogs is that consumers are guaranteed that the products are much cheaper compared to those sold in a regular department store. It is probably because merchants are not typically required by law to add taxes on their products. This eliminates miscellaneous expenses charged by the merchant, the government and the supplier.

With the discovery of the Internet, several companies have created their own website and list a vast number of catalogs for each product line. This is now referred to as E-Commerce or online shopping.

Free Clothing Catalogs Inspire Basic Wardrobe Planning

Enid Sefcovic, Ph.D. asked:

Women’s fashion catalogs are a frugal source of style ideas. Most are free. Fashion consultant Mary Lou Andre suggests that women collect pages for basic wardrobe planning. This strategy makes more sense than heading to the mall to see what is there, only to be disappointed. This is especially true for the over-50 woman, who may find local retailers cater to the younger crowd that uses the mall as a place to socialize.

We can collect free clothing catalogs that fit our lifestyles, tastes, and budgets. Items that we see in magazines may not be available where we shop. Catalog collections are a telephone call or online order away.

Online sites are especially useful for creating a mix-and-match outfit. You can see at a glance whether the items are in your price range, available, and will look good together.

Here are some benefits of basic wardrobe planning and clothes shopping using free clothing catalogs:

Find ideas for updating clothing items already owned by teaming with something new and stylish. Learn that an item in the back of your closet is back in vogue. Spot style and color trends in women’s clothing. Unlike the extreme or expensive fashion in many magazines, we can collect inspirations that are right for our lifestyles. Find hard-to-fit sizes, such as tall, petite, plus, and styles that to fit the changing figures of women over 50. Create an inspiration book for the wardrobe you’d like to have. See new ways to accessorize and combine colors. One year, black and brown were the hot new winter combination. Who could dream this up without browsing style suggestions? Note make-up and hairstyles. Is that tube of orange lipstick still in style? Could your hair use reshaping? Scan a wider range of styles than you would ever be able to see at local stores. Some retailers market solely online. Compare prices immediately, without running from one store to another. And there’s no disappointment of finding that perfect item, the last one available, is not your size.

Some women’s fashion catalogs are targeted at older women. Models may be in their 40s, which is downright elderly for the modeling trade. They may seem like kids to those of us who are 50, 60, 70, and beyond. Yet older faces wearing stylish clothing is rarely seen in fashion magazines.

One clothing website with the older woman in mind and a social conscience is Esperanza Threads. The simple designs look comfortable and are made by low-income women as a project of the Grassroots Coalition for Environmental and Social Justice. Everything from baby rompers to meditation pillows to women’s clothing is made by Esperanza Threads. The clothing is photographed on women who look like the goddess next door with a variety of body types.

If you are worried about online shopping, most retail websites are hyper-security conscious. For example, if a local retailer has neglected strong security protections for credit card checks, your credit card information can be scanned by scammers with special equipment from a passing car. Be careful, but don’t let your concern stop you from online clothes shopping.

In summary, free clothing catalogs offer a treasure of women’s fashion ideas, a wide array of styles and sizes, convenient clothes shopping, and the tools for planning a basic wardrobe that is right for you.

How to Make Strong Catalogs

Katie Marcus asked:

Strength, it is quite an admirable trait in people as well as in things. It is this kind of trait that I like in my catalogs as well. Strong catalog printing means greater success in marketing.

If you are investing in custom catalog printing yourself, you must try to adopt this kind of ideal to assure that your printing money has been spent wisely. It is easy enough to make your catalog designs strong.

In this article, I will teach you how to integrate four crucial strengths in your advertising tool that should make it quite the best one for your business.

• Strength against competition – The first strength that any advertising tool should have is strength against competition. You can achieve this by designing them in such a way as to be different from all other rivals. This can be in terms of the color, the quality, the style or sometimes even the shape and size of the catalog itself. As long as it is distinct and eye catching among the rest of the others, you should have that certain strength against the competition.

• Strength against physical damage – Physically, your advertising material should also be strong. They must be able to resist physical damage. You can achieve this through the proper use of strong paper materials. Cardboard-like or thicker paper must be used as cover to protect the inside pages from damage. A good moisture resistant coating should be used for the cover so that it will not easily deteriorate in accidents involving liquids. This should keep the catalog in good condition for a long duration giving it time to do its mission of marketing.

• Strength in terms of marketing – Speaking of marketing, a catalog of course is primarily a marketing tool. It needs strength as a marketing tool to succeed in its objectives. To achieve this in your own catalogs, you must be good at making content that appeals to the needs and wants of your readers.

In particular, your product images should be well composed and in high quality so that readers can be attracted to buy such good products. You text should be quite encouraging and should play with what the reader wants in his or her products. You must also add in promotional offers like bulk sales, discounts and free items to encourage people to buy and buy more. This must be present in almost all your product pages so that you will have the best marketing impact with your catalogs.

• Strength in terms of artistic impact – If you have not realized this yet, your advertising tools must also almost be like works of art. People like seeing beautiful and artful things and when you do this, people can mark your catalog as quite a memorable read. So if possible, you should hire a professional photographer or graphic artist to do your cover images with artistic flavor. The better looking your marketing materials are, the better people will appreciate it.

With all of these four strengths present in your catalog, you should have a very good and strong package that should give you success in marketing. So focus on giving strength in your catalog printing, and reap the great rewards it provides.

The Sundance Catalog Company

Tammi Ree asked:

With Christmas quickly approaching, I thought I would mention one of my favorite online shopping haunts… it is called The Sundance Catalog Company.

Robert Redford founded the company in 1969 with the earnings from the film, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Found at the base of the beautiful Wasatch Mountains in Salt Lake City, Utah, originally opened as a general store, mail order became available in 1989. Now, some 30 plus years later we can shop online for the unique offerings of artisan’s from all over the world!

Redford’s dedication to the arts, the environment, and human rights is obvious in each item offered by the Catalog. Products ranging from home decor to jewelry and clothing, many of them handcrafted exclusively for Sundance. Artist’s submissions from all over the globe are carefully considered before being selected for the Catalog. Along with a strict adherence to third world country labor laws, any product selected must meet the high standards of Redford’s philosophies.

Most noteworthy of the offerings at Sundance is the jewelry. Beautiful pieces of sterling silver, gold and every gem imaginable handcrafted by some the most well-known jewelry artists in the country.

When buying from Sundance you are supporting craftspeople from all over the world, the Sundance Institute for development of new artists in film, music, dance and theater, and efforts to improve and preserve the environment.

“There are many avenues under the broad category called art, but at its core, to me, art is simply the language of the soul.” –Robert Redford

Examining the Wusthof Catalog

Helen Zee asked:

Wusthof has been one of the biggest names in knives since 1814. Operating from Solingen, Germany, the “Cutlery Capital” of the world, they continue to produce knives that are used by top chefs and four-star kitchens the world over. These knives are the favorites of many prominent chefs such as Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver, and James Martin. This high quality is the result of a rigorous system of forty separate processes that go into the forging of each and every blade.

Wusthof offers many different series of knives, from those aimed at culinary aficionados looking to improve their kitchen to those tailored for top restaurants. Read on for an overview of the current product catalog, set by set. You’re sure to find a knife or knife set that is exactly what you’re looking for.

The Emerilware collection of knives bears the mark of star chef Emeril Legassi, who has used Wusthof knives throughout his career and on his popular show, Emeril Live! Emeril himself handpicked the knives in this set. These blades are designed with ergonomic handles for comfortable cutting. The handles have a pebble grain, slip-resistant finish to reduce kitchen accidents. The blades are made of a stain resistant steel alloy that should last a long time. Easily sharpened, these knives are super sharp and hold their edge well.

Emerilware knives are some of the most modestly priced in the catalog. Priced at prices that all of his fans can afford, these knives still live up the standards of Wusthof quality. A full 18-piece Emerilware set goes for around $150, while individual knives are generally around $20 each. Other knives in this price range include the Silverpoint collection, the design on which many Emerilware knives are based.

For someone looking for a mid-range option, the Le Cordon Bleu collection is an excellent choice. These lightweight knives feature a seamless triple-riveted handle, with the Wusthof logo prominently displayed. With their reduced weight and superior balance, these knives are great for reducing fatigue from lengthy cutting jobs. Precision forged, the blades are some of the sharpest in the catalog.

Knives in the Wustof Le Cordon Bleu collection run about $50 each individually, while you can acquire a 14 piece set for $400. These knives are a great investment – they are all full tang knives, meaning that the metal that anchors the blade to the handle goes all the way into the handle, which makes the blade very stable and sturdy. Other knives in this price range include the Gourmet and Grand Prix collections, which features a different type of handle.

If price is no object, a high-end option from Wusthof is the Ikon set. Ikon knives feature a unique new triple-riveted handle design optimized for the perfect feel in your hand. The handle is constructed of Grenadill, or Mozambique Ebony, one of the toughest woods available. These knives are precision forged, giving them incredible sharpness and durability. The edges of these blades are laser tested to ensure maximum sharpness. Most of the blades feature full tangs, which increases balance and durability.

The Ikon set features some of the highest quality knives on the market today, so you can expect to pay accordingly. Individual knives from this collection cost $100 each, and a full set of 18 knives costs around $1,400! Clearly, these blades are meant for professionals, and are likely out of the price range of most casual buyers. Other options in this price range include the Ikon Classic in black or white, and the Culinar collection, which is a pure stainless steel set.

No matter your needs or culinary skill, there’s a high quality Wusthof knife with your name on it. Don’t waste your money on cheap knives that go dull in days – make an investment that will last with super sharp, long lasting blades.

Catalog Software For Cutting Edge Catalogs

TJ Dhillon asked:

If you have a business that you would like to keep for as much time as you could, do not hesitate to invest. As long as you know what you’re getting into, spending should not be a problem. This is especially true with print catalogs. These materials should actually serve as an extension of you and your business. Thus, it must be created with the highest quality in mind, both materially and in content.

Of course, quality is never something you will just think about and create in a spur of a moment. This is why you need to make all the preparations in order to achieve the best possible quality of print catalogs you can create. After all, this is you reaching out to the people who will make your business a success. If you compromise on quality, they will know it and that’s the last thing you’ll want to happen.

As always, begin with a plan. In this plan, you will detail the things you will be needing. Of course, you need to decide on the technology you will be using for your catalog. Are you going for traditional printing or the online route? For the latter, you will need software designed for this purpose. For catalog printing, the program you will need closely resemble CD catalog software or those where a high degree of organization is required by users.

After determining the technology you will use, you need pictures. Obviously, this is because of the fact that catalogs are visual mediums that rarely work without the color and vibrance of well-conceptualized photos. Still, while these images initially grab the attention of people, it’s the text that will make them stay and read on. This means aside from the photos, you also need to prepare your content. It has to be flawless in grammar and must be short but catchy. People normally just scan through what they have to read so don’t make a novel out of your catalogs. The best way to structure your content is to have brief and helpful. That means people must simply understand in simple terms why they need your product.

Although the right pictures and content sound like they’re the only thing you need to have a successful catalogue, they’re not. You need to pull them together into the right concept. Otherwise, they still won’t work. When you talk of concept, you take into consideration the market that you are targeting. For example, if your product is fashion jewelry, the women won’t like it in a cowboy-themed catalog. It sounds obvious but a lot of businessman still make this mistake. The concept has to fit not only the product but, most importantly, the people who will be buying because they are the ones who will decide the fate of your catalogs as far as being effective is concerned.

Proper Planning to Print Cheap Catalogs

Katie Marcus asked:

The goal that I would like to help you achieve in this article is to print cheap catalogs. This is something that most of us are trying to do these days just to help out a bit with the business finances.

Cheap catalog printing however can only be achieved through proper planning and proper knowledge of the whole printing process. Therefore, in this article, I will tell you how to get the cheapest possible cost for each of the catalog printing elements. Let us start with the most obvious and expensive element and that is the printing.

1. Cheap Printers — To get cheap printers for producing catalogs, you will need some patience and research skills. As you no doubt know by now, not all printers are the same and they vary greatly in terms of printing quality and more importantly printing COST. You will need to find a good balance of cheap printing cost with decent quality prints to get the best out of your business catalogs. This means that you will have to research very well.

I recommend using the Internet to find online printing services for your catalogs. Searching online is much faster and you can easily find reviews and feedbacks about certain publishing firms while checking out the printing rates. Look at the raw facts about printing quotations and customer reactions to these businesses. Find the cheapest and most highly regarded of them all and you have your cheap printer.

2. Cheap Designers — Now, finding cheap designers is far easier. You can also use the Internet for this, or you can also just ask around among your friends and family. You just need to find young budding artists preferably at around college level that can help you design your catalogs for a meager fee. You can even hire them as Interns and get the for free if you want. Since most of these your artists are eager to display their talent, you should have no trouble getting new and exciting designs for your catalogs.

3. Cheap Writers — For cheap writers for your catalog, the same rules apply as above. You can also indeed hire young writers for a meager fee or hire them as Interns instead. Just give them the information that you want them to write on and you should get some nicely written text for your catalog. Make sure to guide them though so that you can get them to write with the style and angle that you want.

4. Cheap Materials — Finally, when printing time comes, you should also try to find some cheap materials to use for your color catalogs. Thus, instead of having the whole catalog printed in thick glossy paper, why not use cheaper normal kinds of paper inside, while having thicker material on the cover. This can cut a lot of dollars unto the printing material cost. You might also want to go for cheaper but still good binding methods such as staple binding or comb binding to further cut down on costs.

Doing all these things should get you much closer to the goal of cheap catalog printing. Just try to be patient and determined so that you would be printing great color catalogs at a fraction of the cost. Good Luck!
