How to Make Catalog Marketing Work For You

Katie Marcus asked:

Catalog printing is great to get direct sales for your business. Nevertheless, do you really know how to make catalog marketing work for you? Do you know how to take advantage of catalogs?

Do you know how to develop a business image, establish a reputation and thereby increase sales success? If you just print catalogs for sales, not really for TRUE marketing purposes, then read on, and let me tell you how you can make catalog marketing work for you.

o Making marketing catalogs: First, let us tackle the tricky task of making your marketing tools. There are three simple steps to do this.

o Research – Initially, you may need to research. You cannot just print without some idea as to how to do it correctly. Do some market research about your target market and see the ideal things that they like to see. Also, try to determine where your target market usually hangs out, and what methods are easiest to get them to have a copy of your marketing tool. Gather your data in one location and study it to get a better idea of how you should design.

o Design – With research done, you should be ready for the design. Based on the data you collected, it should be pretty obvious what kind of design you will need. You will know, depending on the wants and needs of the target market the appropriate design theme to use. For example, if you have to present them to corporate clients, then a more professional looking catalog is warranted. However, a more general audience can make do with simple and easy to understand catalogs with nice and vibrant colors. Just design in a way to appeal to your target marketing and you should be fine.

o Print – Finally, to get them produced you must turn to a printing company. I recommend using an online printing service for this so that you can have an easier time. You will just have to pay for the printing services and wait to receive the final output. This is a far better cry from creating them yourself one by one using your office printer. With that, you should have some nice output done.

o How to give away: Now, let us get into the hard part and that is the distribution. To succeed in your marketing, you have to distribute to as many number of people as possible. There are three ways to do it.

o Postal Service – If you have customers clear across the country, the best way is to mail them. This comes at an investment in the form of postage stamps and envelopes, but this has a potential to reach a lot of people across far distances. You will need exact names and addresses though so this can be difficult. However, if you can pull it off, you can reap a lot of benefits indeed.

o By hand – If you want a more local approach to distribution you can also do it by hand. By just going around giving away to customers at your shop the people outside and even leaving some copies at public places you can get the marketing word out across a lot of people in your area. While this can be a hit and miss affair at least this is the cheapest and easiest way to distribute.

o By products and other items- Finally, you can distribute by just leaving a few copies of them within product packaging or via public and press relations kits. This will directly give your most loyal customers and the most important media outlets a chance to study and want the products.

Now you know how to make color catalogs and how to use them for marketing. You can now probably go ahead with your own marketing campaign with some semblance of a good plan. Good Luck!

Wholesale Supplier Catalog – 3 Important Things to Check in a Catalog For Wholesale Supplies

Posted by | Business | Tuesday 24 August 2010 11:37 pm
Dennis William asked:

There are things you should look for when you are checking out a wholesale supplier catalog. This is important information that you might need in the future. Catalogs of wholesale suppliers contain much information, but you do not really need to memorize or take note of everything. Just remember a few things and it could be as good as remembering the entire product directory or listing itself. And what are these things? Here they are:

First thing to take note of in a wholesale supplier catalog is, of course, the things that you might buy in the future, items in the directory that could be useful for you. Now, if the product listing is a very thick one and there are very many things listed, it could overwork and strain your memory a bit trying to memorize a lot of things. If this is the case, don’t make things hard on you. Take out a pen and paper and write down the items.

Next to the items you have taken mental note of or written down on a piece of paper, check their respective prices. Basically, this is what a catalog is all about – a list of a wholesale supplier’s products and their prices. Try to determine if the prices are cheaper, more expensive, or just about the same compared to the actual price you personally know about.

Also, the last thing you should not fail to check if you are looking and taking note of a wholesale supplier catalog is the discount you will be getting for purchasing items listed. Do not forget, you are holding a product listing of a wholesale supplier and not a retailer’s product listing. When we buy in large scale or in bulk, we normally get discounts for that. Again compare the discounts offered with discounts you know offered from another wholesale supplier.

After finishing your notes about the items, their prices, and the discounts you get from the wholesale supplier’s catalog, you will have no problem deciding where to buy things from since you already know from which distributor you will be able to save more. But if you don’t have plans buying anything yet, keep your notes. You might be surprised about changes implemented by the different distributors regarding their price list. Those who offered cheaper goods before could change and offer goods at a more expensive price. To be sure of things, check the updated wholesale supplier catalog once more and do the things again mentioned above.

How to Build Customer Loyalty with Catalogs

Posted by | Business | Tuesday 17 August 2010 2:45 pm
Carla San Gaspar asked:

Differentiating Loyal Customers and 4 Ways to Engage and Attract Them

At this point catalog printing may be the last on your mind for your marketing campaign. Aside from being more expensive to print, it looks to laborious to be read by customers with short-attention spans. Multi-pages materials can appear intimidating to your regular customers.

Unlike flyers and posters though, catalogs target potential loyal customers instead of just regular customers. It may seem that they are the same, but there are primary differences.

Loyal Customers vs. Regular customers

o Regular customers generate repeat sales. They purchase from your store perhaps because you offer the cheapest services or you have the most convenient location. They purchase commodities and fast moving inventory. But the moment it becomes inconvenient, or your competitors start a price war, they’ll be out of your door before you know it.

o Loyal customers on the other hand invest in their purchases and choose the benefits of premium products over standard fare. They go to your store because they appreciate how you do business and treat you as an expert in your field. When there are lapses in your performance, they will offer you suggestions and will wait for you to fix your problems.

Although loyal customers are preferable to loyal customers, they are both important to your business. Regular customers are easy to come by and can be motivated with flyers that offer special prices, or free deliveries. Loyal customers on the other hand will only reward hard work and good investment.

When you want to attract loyal customers or create loyalty among existing ones, you have to show them first and foremost that you deserve their loyalty. Investing in catalogs is investing in their education, and communicates your business philosophy.

1. Be sincere in your desire to help.

Enthusiasts avoid pushy salesmen or hyped up advertising. They appreciate however businessmen who listen to their needs and suggestions and act upon them. Provide them with the information they need instead of simply pushing the products you have on offer.

2. Offer alternatives.

Customers look for solutions more than just simple items. It’s one thing to accommodate their needs; it’s another to anticipate them. Offer an extensive line of products and offer a brand that will best cater to their need if the generic brand won’t do the job. You have to explain though the difference between the two items. Otherwise they will see it as a mere marketing move.

3. Back up explanations with hard data

You may spend a lot of time explaining, but a printed material can go a long way in backing up your word especially when it holds hard facts and statistics. Offer to mail them a catalog about the product in question that will help clarify things further.

4. Improve on your Offer

They have to see it to believe it. For those items that offer qualitative benefits, allow your customers to experience the difference. You can offer a product sample, a demo, or a free trial. Sometimes though, they have to see the context in which the products are being used. Include real life testimonials from people who have profited from your offer.

Why choose catalog printing instead of cheaper to produce advertisements? Catalogs are an investment that pays back with potentially higher customer loyalty.

Apply What You Know About Marketing Catalogs

Posted by | Business | Sunday 15 August 2010 4:35 am
Kaye Marks asked:

Are you writing a product description or are you writing something that is specifically meant to generate a lot of interest on a product and get that product to sell well?

Catalog printing is not something completely removed from the world of advertising. There are a lot of similarities that you can find among the different forms of marketing, so why am I picking up so many obviously written by people who do not realize any of this?

How do I know? I read through these product descriptions that I suppose do describe the product, but they do it without any hint of emotion or feeling for the product itself. I sense no excitement or interest in the words and how they are phrased. Let me ask, if the person writing the material is not interested than why exactly am I supposed to be when reading it?

That is the question you need to be aware of and that you need to be able to answer. Let us compare catalog printing to postcards here, because I think a strong comparison can be drawn.

What is a postcard supposed to do? It needs to grab a person’s attention quickly and gets a brief piece of information to them right away. Companies accomplish this by adding a lot of emotion and a lot of energy into their postcards. They make sure that they have colorful and interesting images, and that the writing is as direct as possible yet still imbued with a natural sense of interest and excitement.

The amount of writing you will do for a postcard is probably going to be about the same as the amount you will need for each product in your catalogs, which is why this stacks up so well when the comparison is made.

Why are catalogs oftentimes viewed differently? I am guessing that the reason has to do with postcards being a single entity all on their own. Your success will be entirely dictated by how much people like that one product featured in a postcard they are looking at. A catalog is instead comprised of several different parts. This is not a single product description that you are writing but perhaps fifty or more of them.

Each description is therefore given less weight and given less attention when writing. This would not help you sell any type of product. What you need to do is realize that in order for you to get lots of people become really excited over your products, each description has to be written as if that product were the only product you are promoting and selling.

You need to start going into your writing with this kind of mindset. Never think about the catalog as a whole when writing the descriptions, but instead take each one on their own and do your best to make that particular description as powerful as it can be. If you can do that than you will start to generate a lot more interest in your products and your advertising tool.

asked:

I work for my family business and we’d like to mail out our catalogs to 13,000 households within the county. What’s the least expensive way of obtaining the mailing addresses and mailing them out? I understand I can buy mailing lists and notice most catalogs either have a permit # with the post office or have address labels that read “Resident”. Thank you!

The CHEAP Guide to Catalog Printing

Posted by | Business | Monday 9 August 2010 6:52 am
Kaye Marks asked:

Are you searching the Internet for cheap catalog printing? Well if you are, then you are indeed in luck. This guide has been specifically made for people like you who do not want to spend too much money in printing.

You will be happy to know that there are several simple things that you can do yourself to make your catalog printing more affordable. This comprises our “C.H.E.A.P.” guide to printing catalogs.

o C: Concise content – The initial thing that you can do to make your catalogs cheaper is to have the most concise content as possible. Extraneous content like nonsensical paragraphs and images can add in extra pages in your catalogs adding to its cost. You will be actually surprised as to how many pages you can save if you dump the public relations talk and company praising and just focus on what the customers want. In fact, you can save up to 5-10 catalog pages if you really are good in writing and positioning of content. Those saved pages can save you around 5-10% of costs if you are good.

o H: Help is not needed – Another thing that can eliminate some major costs for printing is to cut down on your professional help. Some people hire professional designers and writers to create the content of their catalogs. The professional fees for these people alone can really make your catalog costs significant. If you are skilled enough and determined enough to cut cost, then you can probably try and not hire help on your next printing project. You can try to take over the design and writing of the content for the catalog yourself. That should save you an immense amount of money that can be used for things that are more important.

o E: Emphasizing the front – Also, another way to save money in printing catalogs is to use only high quality paper at the front of the catalog. High quality thick paper can be expensive. If you only use it in the front, while the inner pages are printed in normal thinner paper, you can again save a lot of money with the reduced use of the more expensive paper. You can possible get 10-20% of you money back just by doing this option for printing.

o A: Alternative sizes – Of course, you can also try to play with the printing sizes of your catalogs to save money. Smaller sizes mean cheaper prices for your catalogs. If you are willing to sacrifice some size for savings, then you can do this for your catalog order. Do not worry about losing the big catalog advantage though, since smaller catalogs are actually easier to distribute and handle. Therefore, you will not have to worry about your catalog’s impact.

o P: Printing wholesale – Lastly, to make cheap catalog printing come true, you can invest in wholesale printing for your catalogs. Much of the extra cost of printing catalogs is for reprints. Some companies do not know how many catalog pieces they actually need for their project. If their initial printing is lacking then they will spend more and more for each reprinting that is needed. By employing wholesale printing, that extra cost is eliminated.

In fact, if you have large enough initial order for catalogs the price per piece of catalog can be reduced to 25-30%. That is a large amount of savings that you certainly should take advantage of.

Therefore, that is our “C.H.E.A.P” guide for catalog printing. Just remember those letters and your dreams to have cheap catalogs can come true.
